A powerful anti-Hamas clan leader who protects civilians in Gaza and is allegedly backed by Israel has been killed in Rafah, according to multiple reports.
According to analysts, Yasser Abu Shabab, the leader of the Abu Shabaab militia, known locally as the “Popular Forces” of the Gaza Strip, came to the fore with his cooperation with Israel against the influence of Hamas in the region.
“The Abu Shabaab militia helped Israel protect local populations and prevent Hamas from harming them.” Professor Kobi Michaelsenior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) and the Misgav Institute told Fox News Digital:

“Hamas is greatly distressed by these militias and is doing everything it can to disband them. It perceives them as a real threat, but the killing of Abu Shabaab by its rival Hamula shows that simply disarming Hamas will not be enough.”
“Still, without effective governance as an alternative to Hamas, the Strip will descend into chaos,” Michael added.
As Fox News Digital reported in July, Abu Shabaab’s group began forming in early 2024 after the Israeli Defense Forces entered Rafah and Hamas began losing control of the region.

on thursday, Jerusalem Post Sources claimed Abu Shabaab was initially injured in a clan-related conflict. He was later evacuated to a hospital in southern Israel and later died from his injuries.
Popular Forces later issued a statement, also quoted by The Jerusalem Post, confirming Abu Shabaab’s death and insisting that he was killed while trying to resolve a local dispute.

In a past interview YnetAbu Shabab said, “We will not leave the Gaza Strip and will continue to fight Hamas until the last one is dead.”

“Israel has never believed that these militias could replace Hamas or be an effective ruler of the Gaza Strip,” Michael added.
“But both sides have a common enemy: Hamas.” He continued: “On the other hand, these militias were against Hamas and were still willing to fight Hamas. Israel perceived these militias as another operational tool in its war against Hamas and cooperated with them based on local interests and substance.”

The group released a video on November 18 showing fighters preparing for a security sweep to “clear Rafah of terrorism,” a reference to Hamas forces believed to be hiding in the area.
According to Fox News Digital, the ceasefire created a new environment of militias, clan groups and networks as Hamas’ control in the region, including the Popular Forces in Rafah, weakened.
