Railway Police To Deploy AI-driven CCTV To Boost Security

Hyderabad: The State Railway Police (GRP) will use AI-powered video analytics and integrated CCTV systems to strengthen detection and investigation, as well as predictive and preventive policing, to enhance the safety and security of passengers and their belongings.
Announcing this at the annual press conference on Wednesday, Secunderabad Railways GRP Superintendent of Police Chandana Deepti said that priority will be given to strengthening the pan-India criminal gang records database and ensuring that it is used effectively for coordinated action to track down criminals and put them behind bars.
He said GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) teams will intensify searches and carry out surprise checks to prevent drug smuggling. High-definition night vision CCTV cameras have been installed in the engines and compartments of express trains to prevent accidental and suicidal deaths and to detect and arrest stone-throwers.
Integrated real-time data from Rail Madad (139) is also used to improve response time and facilitate rapid registration of FIRs. Sharing crime statistics, Deepti said that cases of harassment and POCSO have increased to 16 this year compared to six cases in 2024. Physical and other crimes fell from 1,971 reported last year to 1,538. However, the number of regular theft cases on trains and platforms increased from 829 to 1,013 in 2024.
Overall, total crimes, including gratuitous homicide, murder, attempt to murder, dowry harassment, stupefying drug cases, petty theft, kidnapping, auto theft, possession of play station, POCSO and bodily crimes, have decreased from 2,835 last year to 1,607 this year.
He said that Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) teams rescued 500 children, 75 girls and 425 boys, this year, while 84 children, 25 girls and 59 boys, were rescued in 2024. Accidents, suicides and natural deaths on the rail network have fallen from 1,571 in 2024 to 1,371 this year.
Under the NDPS Act, 70 cases have been registered this year and eight cases under the Excise Act, compared to 54 NDPS cases and five Excise Act cases in 2024.
Property worth ₹ 43.17 lakh in 2024 has been recovered this year. However, property losses increased from ₹ 374.73 crore reported last year to ₹ 489.95 crore this year.
