Crews try to rescue 80 miners in the Dominican Republic

Government officials said rescue efforts were ongoing and at least 80 miners were trapped in the Dominican Republic.

Miners were trapped when part of a zinc and copper mine in Cerros, Maimón, collapsed, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The mine is located in a rural area northwest of the capital Santo Domingo, where relatives anxiously await the rescue of their loved ones.

The ministry said the miners were in a safe area underground and were lifted up.

It was not immediately known whether any of these had surfaced.
