Nancy Pelosi made a big statement about her tenure in the US Congress on Thursday. He announced that he would not run in the 2026 elections for the next Congress, ending his four-decade career as an icon of progressive Democrats, but was viewed otherwise by the right.
Nancy Pelosi is the first woman to serve as the powerful Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
The congresswoman made the announcement two days after voters in California on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved “Proposition 50,” the state’s redistricting effort that aims to flip five House seats to Democrats in next year’s midterm elections.
Before California, Texas had made a similar move to increase Republicans’ chances. “I will not be seeking re-election to Congress. With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service,” Pelosi said in a video posted on X.
The 85-year-old leader was first elected in 1987, became the first female speaker in 2007 and played a key role in shaping the Democratic Party’s agenda.
Pelosi’s fight against Donald Trump
He has been fighting against Republicans for control of the House of Representatives for decades, especially since Donald Trump came onto the scene to lead the Republicans. The two faced off when Nancy Pelosi was running against Donald Trump during his first term as president, from 2017-2020.
Pelosi’s retirement dates back to decades when younger Democrats criticized elders for holding on to their positions of power for too long and failing to pave the way for future generations. As an example, 81-year-old Democratic President Joe Biden hobbled during his debate against Donald Trump and was subsequently pressured to give up his presidential bid.
When asked about her career regrets, Pelosi said her greatest wish was to win more elections to remove Republicans from power and “make sure that a creature like Donald Trump never becomes president of the United States.” He twice tried to remove Trump from power through House impeachment in late 2019 and early 2021, only to see Senate Republicans acquit him.
