Scunthorpe United footballer injured in Cambridgeshire train stabbing | UK news

It has been announced that Scunthorpe United footballer Jonathan Gjoshe was one of those attacked during a mass stabbing on a busy train in Cambridgeshire.

The club said Gjoshe suffered non-life-threatening injuries and remained in hospital.

11 people were treated in hospital after the attack on the high-speed train from Doncaster to London on Saturday evening. Anthony Williams, 32, appeared in Peterborough Magistrates’ Court charged with 10 counts of attempted murder in connection with the incident.

Scunthorpe United said in a statement: “Scunthorpe United can confirm that registered player Jonathan Gjoshe was one of the victims affected by the shocking attack on a London-bound LNER train on Saturday evening.

“We can confirm that Jonathan sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the attack but remains in hospital. “Due to ongoing investigations we are unable to provide any further updates at this time.

“Everyone at the club, the board, management and teammates as well as all the staff behind the scenes, sends Jonathan our sincerest wishes for a full recovery, which also goes to all the victims on the train.”

Another of the victims was named by the BBC as Stephen Crean. A Nottingham Forest football fan reportedly came face to face with the train attacker in a carriage.

She told the broadcaster: “I confronted this guy because I needed to make sure the door was locked and I looked around to buy some time. But then he started, he pulled out this thing. It was an oversized knife thing.”

One LNER staff member remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital following the stabbings, while four others remain in hospital.
