New York Attorney General Letitia James to swear in Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani

New York Attorney General Letitia James and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced that they will be sworn in on behalf of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
James will administer the oath of office to Mamdani at midnight on January 1, while Sanders will administer the oath of office to her again at the public inauguration later that day.
“At a time when democracy is under attack and skepticism about our policies deepens, Zohran Mamdani represents a new generation of progressive leadership rooted in courage, integrity, and solidarity,” Sanders said in a statement. he said.
“His victory isn’t just about one city or one election; it’s about the power of the working-class movement that says clearly: The future of New York belongs to the people, not the billionaire class. It’s my honor to swear in him as the next mayor of New York City,” he added.

Mamdani thanked the two politicians for their willingness to participate.
“It is an honor to be sworn in by two leaders I have admired for years: Attorney General Tish James and Senator Bernie Sanders. Attorney General James has taken on strong interests in defending New Yorkers and embodied the principle of equal justice under the law,” Mamdani said in a statement. he said.

The public inauguration in January will be a much larger event than under past mayors, whose inaugural events have traditionally been limited to about 4,000 tickets.
Mamdani instead opted to hold viewing areas and a public block party on Broadway.
