Delhi government plans to operate two hydrogen fuel buses in tie-up with NTPC: Delhi minister

New Delhi: The Delhi government plans to operate two hydrogen-powered buses in the national capital as part of its efforts towards clean energy and sustainable public transport, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said on Thursday.

Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is working on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with state-owned NTPC Limited, which will provide the buses under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

“Delhi is steadily moving towards clean, future-ready mass mobility solutions. Hydrogen fuel technology represents a significant step in our journey towards sustainable and environmentally responsible transportation systems,” Singh said.

As part of the proposed operational framework, the initial deployment of hydrogen fuel cell buses is being carried out in coordination with NTPC.

The buses are proposed to operate under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model where DTC facilitates operational deployment.

According to officials, costs exceeding the approved GCC rate of Rs 45 per kilometer will be borne by NTPC.
“Under the proposed arrangement, operational expenses at approved GCC rates will be borne by DTC, while support for costs outside the GCC framework is being explored through NTPC’s CSR mechanism,” the Minister said. Singh said the initiative aims to introduce advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology to Delhi’s public transport ecosystem, complementing the city’s ongoing clean mobility transition and environmentally sustainable transport solutions.

“By collaborating with organizations like NTPC, we are exploring innovative ways to strengthen Delhi’s public transport network while introducing advanced zero-emission technologies that can contribute to cleaner air and a greener future,” he added.
