Donald Trump’s 9-word response on Canada deal leaves Oval Office in stitches | US | News

President Donald Trump’s announcement that he will not be able to strike a trade deal with Canada sent many journalists in the Oval Office bursting with laughter.

The United States and Canada have tried for months to successfully finalize a trade deal.

During a meeting in the Oval Office on Tuesday afternoon, President Trump praised Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as a “great man” who “knows what he wants.”

The praise prompted a journalist to prompt Trump to question why the two countries could not reach an agreement, and his response amused everyone present.

“He’s keeping things going? If he’s a great guy and you want to mess with Canada, why not?” the journalist asked.

“Because I want to be a great man, too,” the President replied.

Another reporter asked Trump if the Canadian Prime Minister had done anything this week to hinder the talks.

Trump said Carney was “a good guy, but he could be a very bad guy.”

“He is a world-class leader,” Trump adds. “He’s a good guy, does a great job and is a tough negotiator.”

Regarding the USMCA (North American Free Trade Agreement), Trump stated that separate agreements could be renegotiated with each country or the agreement could be revised.

When questioned about his preference, Trump said, “I don’t care.

“I want to get the best possible deal for this nation while keeping Canada in mind.”

As with several Oval office visits this year, the Canadian delegation will likely view the lack of public discord as a victory. Both leaders were brimming with mutual respect.

However, despite optimism from both sides about reaching an agreement, it is clear that there are still hurdles to overcome.
