Ireland 13-26 New Zealand: Beauden Barrett ‘gutted’ for Tadhg Beirne after controversial red card

Alongside captain Scott and center Jordie, Beauden Barrett was one of three brothers who started the match for the All Blacks.

However, Scott was forced to leave the game after three minutes due to a “tear tear in his leg” in a separate incident in the Beirne red.

Jordie, who played for Ireland’s Leinster province in the second half of last season, was also taken out of the game due to a leg injury in the second half.

Beauden said Jordie’s injury “didn’t look too good” and he was photographed with ice on his left knee after the game.

New Zealand will play Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday before taking on England and Wales to complete our tour.

“Obviously my brothers are a little beat up,” Beauden Barrett said.

“I was extremely proud and happy with our response. I could have let the sight of my two brothers go shake me.

“I was impressed with how we stayed connected and aligned on what we wanted to achieve, and we got the right result.”

Barrett was asked if he would like to follow in the footsteps of his younger brother Jordie by playing for Ireland during a break with the Blues in his native New Zealand, and he said he had been asked the question by a number of Irish fans at a sponsor event in Chicago before the game.

“About 90% of the people who came were Irish fans and I think everyone asked me that question. Mostly Leinster fans, but occasionally Munster fans,” Barrett said with a smile.

“It’s very appealing because I love the Irish and have spent time there in the past.

“But I’m 34 now, so playing for Ireland might be a tough sell for my wife and family. Never say never.”
