Trump labels Washington mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George a ‘communist’

President Donald Trump called council member Janeese Lewis George a “communist” in Washington, D.C., on Sunday and vowed to block policies he said would undermine public safety and reverse his administration’s efforts to reduce crime in the nation’s capital.

In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump said he planned to meet with Lewis George and argued that Washington had become safer under his administration. He also vowed to oppose any agenda that he said would weaken immigration enforcement, police or the city’s criminal justice system.

“Communist Janeese Lewis George, who is almost certain to be elected Mayor of Washington, DC, has stated that she wants to defund the prisons, make DC a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, readmit Criminal Illegal Aliens into our beloved Capital, resist Crime Fighting Crackdowns, Defend the Police, destroy Cashless Bail, and many other ‘things’ that are destroying the Capital,” the President wrote on Truth Social.

Trump continued: “In the end this will never work and I won’t even let it get a chance because I worked so hard to make Washington D.C., the Envy of the World, virtually crime-free and with an unparalleled Beautification process.” “I will be meeting with Janeese Lewis George, but I must warn everyone that Washington DC is a Safe and Prestigious Community again.

“Many people, including me, worked long and hard to get it there, and we will not let it be destroyed by a Communist loyalist who has no intention of MAKING WASHINGTON GREAT AGAIN!” he added.

Self-described Democratic socialist and District of Columbia Council member Lewis George defeated Kenyan McDuffie and five other candidates in the Democratic mayoral primary earlier this month, putting him in position to replace Mayor Muriel Bowser in a city where Democrats overwhelmingly dominated the general election.

His primary victory sets the stage for a potential clash with Trump, who has made reducing crime in Washington and reshaping the nation’s capital the focus of his second term. The president maintained a National Guard presence in the city and repeatedly threatened to end the District’s home rule if he believed local leaders were unable to control crime.

Lewis George harshly criticized Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and expansion of the federal law enforcement presence in Washington. Following the president’s decision to deploy the Guard last year, he called the move a “direct attack” on city residents and accused Trump of weaponizing the Homeland Government Act.

During the mayoral campaign, Lewis George argued that “federal troops” and “masked ICE agents” posed a greater threat to young Washington residents than juvenile crime and opposed curfews and reliance on federal enforcement, instead advocating expanded youth programs and other community investments.

Trump has previously suggested he would consider putting Washington under more federal control if Lewis George were elected mayor.

“I wouldn’t like that, and maybe we’ll take back Washington, govern on a federal basis,” Trump told reporters earlier this month. “We won’t put up with this. We won’t lose our jobs.”
