Chhattisgarh BJP MLA accused of assaulting government official

A government official in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district accused the ruling BJP MLA and his supporters of attacking him. On the other hand, the official is accused of behaving inappropriately with the MLA’s female relative. The official and the MLA along with their supporters have filed separate FIRs.

Nayab (MP) Tehsildar Tushar Manik, posted as Mainpat Tehsil chief in Rajapur Tehsil, alleged that Ramkumar Toppo, who represents Sitapur constituency in the State Assembly, assaulted him on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, after accusing him of misbehaving with the MLA’s relative, who had visited his office on official business. He denied mistreating the woman.

Nayab (MP) Tehsildar Tushar Manik, posted in Mainpat Tehsil in Rajapur, alleged that MLA Ramkumar Toppo, representing Sitapur constituency, attacked him on Wednesday. Mr. Toppo allegedly accused Mr. Manik of behaving inappropriately with a relative who was visiting the office on official business. Manik denied acting inappropriately towards the woman.

Mr. Manik told reporters that an elderly woman visited his office on Wednesday and came with documents regarding the issuance of a document. shodh kshamta praman patra (certificate of solvency) is required for prisoners’ parole-related formalities.

“However, I told him that the required form in the prison letter was missing. He said he would fill it out himself. I stayed in the office until 17.00 in the evening, but no one came.” [with the filled form]. “After 5pm, another woman came and insisted that I sign the document immediately,” she said.

Mr. Manik added that he told the woman that the reader to assist her in the signature process was not there and would return the next day and that it would not be possible to fill out the form immediately.

“I told him to come the next day and that I would sign the file after my reader took office, but he insisted that I sign the file immediately,” he said. The official also said that he left his post without signing the file, but denied accusations of abuse of power.

“I didn’t misbehave with him, but he said, ‘Why did I ask who you were?’ “he said,” he added.

Official claims he was attacked

Mr. Manik said that when he returned home, Mr. Toppo’s personal assistant called him and asked him to meet the legislator in Rajapur, so he went there along with SDM Fagesh Sinha.

“The MLA was waiting with a group of his supporters. Some of them started attacking me. The MLA then took me out. He called the woman, who was said to be his cousin. Then the MLA also attacked me. The SDM intervened and saved me,” alleged Mr. Manik.

While Mr. Toppo was not available, a relative spoke to the media and alleged that Mr. Manik spoke to him rudely and refused to do official business for which he had gone there. “He pushed and harassed me, used casteist remarks and behaved inappropriately,” she alleged.

Surguja Collector Ajeet Vasant said both parties have filed complaints against each other.
