Dearborn Public Schools apologizes after pork served to students in Ramadan
Dearborn Public Schools in Michigan apologized to parents after more than 200 students were mistakenly given pork during Ramadan.
Interim Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent said, “Although our investigation found no malice on the part of those involved, human error does not excuse the seriousness of this incident.” Lamis Srour he wrote in a recent letter to parents.
“No matter how much we want to, we can’t change what happened.” Srour wrote. “I humbly offer you my most sincere apologies and a promise that this will not happen again in the future.”

At OL Smith Middle School in Dearborn, 200 servings of pepperoni pizza, which is not halal and contains pork, were distributed to students during Ramadan from February 23 to March 5, 2026.
Srour stated that various steps have been taken to ensure that Muslim students are never fed non-halal meat again, and that “a second Halal Certified food provider has been added to the district’s vendor list.”
“Dearborn is one of the first school districts in the country to offer halal food options to our students since 2003, when we began offering limited menu options,” Srour wrote.
“Over the years, we have been able to expand our offerings, train staff on proper handling procedures, and provide meal options that meet the nutritional needs of all students,” he added. “Know that our commitment to developing and being responsive to our students will always ensure that our cafeterias are a welcoming space for everyone in our community.”

Some users expressed their concerns to X about what the incident meant for non-Muslim students.

Burmawi added: “This is the de facto Islamic standardization of accommodation in a taxpayer-funded institution.”
