India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Parvathaneni Harish shared on Wednesday that India has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the seventh time for the term 2026-28.

In a post on X, he thanked all delegations for their support and underlined how the elections reflected India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“India was today elected for the seventh time to the Human Rights Council at the UN for the term 2026-28. We thank all delegations for their overwhelming support. This election reflects India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. We look forward to serving this goal throughout our tenure,” he said.

The Human Rights Council is the main intergovernmental body responsible for human rights within the United Nations. Established by the General Assembly in 2006, its mission is to strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.

The Council, composed of 47 Member States, provides a multilateral forum to address human rights violations and country situations. It responds to human rights emergencies and provides advice on how human rights can be better implemented on the ground.

India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, in an earlier statement, had said that India’s deepening relationship with the United Nations is based on its steadfast commitment to multilateralism and dialogue as the key to achieving common goals and addressing common challenges faced by the global community.

India, a founding member of the United Nations, strongly supports the purposes and principles of the UN and contributes significantly to the implementation of the objectives of the Charter and the development of specialized programs and agencies of the UN.

India believes that the United Nations and the international relations norms it supports remain the most effective tool in tackling today’s global challenges.
