Andrew, fresh off the title of “Prince”, is understood to be moving from his Windsor mansion, Royal Lodge, to his Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

Official notice to surrender the lease at Royal Lodge was given on Thursday and the move will take place as soon as possible.

The historic, sprawling estate covers approximately 20,000 acres (8,100 ha) with 600 acres (242 ha) of gardens.

It was purchased in 1862 as a private country residence for the future Edward VII when he was Albert, Prince of Wales, and has since been passed from monarch to monarch.

The site boundary is outlined to show landmarks: Sandringham House in the centre, nearby Gardens House, Anmer Hall to the north-east and Wood Farm, Park House and York Cottage to the west. A small inset map highlights the property's location in the south-east of the UK.

The land itself encompasses several residential villages and hamlets and includes approximately 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) of agricultural land.

The main building, Sandringham House, is thought to have over a hundred rooms, including the ballroom.

It remains a rural retreat for the Royal Family and is where they traditionally gather at Christmas.

Sandringham is a private property, not an official royal residence, and it is understood the King will fund Andrew’s stay there privately and that it will not be directly funded by taxpayers.

The palace has yet to say exactly where on the estate Andrew will live or when he might move out.

However, royal sources said this would not happen immediately, but rather “as soon as possible and practicable”.

Here’s a look at some of the options on the site.

York Cottage

York Cottage, originally known as Bachelor’s Cottage, is about a quarter of a mile from the main house.

It has its own stables and kennel buildings and overlooks one of two man-made lakes on the property, according to Historic England.

Before Prince Harry’s marriage to the Duchess of Sussex, the couple There were reports that York Cottage may have been gifted by Elizabeth for use as a country residence, but such a plan was never confirmed and the move never materialised.

It has reportedly been used as offices and accommodation for staff in recent years.

Park House

Park House, the birthplace and childhood home of Diana, Princess of Wales, was rented by the Spencer family for many years.

In 1983 it was gifted to Leonard Cheshire, a disability charity, which used it to run a 16-bedroom hotel for disabled people, their carers and their families.

The charity had planned a £2.3 million refurbishment before the start of the pandemic, but announced in 2020 that it would not accept the offer and instead said it was working with the Sandringham estate to get out of its lease.

Another option is Gardens House, once the head gardener’s residence on the Sandringham estate.

The Edwardian house has six bedrooms and three bathrooms, is dog-friendly and is one of two properties on the estate offered as a public holiday.

There is a working sawmill and organic farm on its property.

happened It will be released in July Price per week is £4,110. It is not uncommon for royal residences to rent properties to holidaymakers; Eight cottages and guesthouses are available for rent at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Frenzy

Another possibility is The Folly, a three-bedroom, two-bathroom lodge built in the 1800s.

Complete with a turret and wraparound balcony, this building was used as a hunting lodge and a place to have afternoon tea.

The mansion, which is also listed as a public holiday let, is said to have room for six people – unlike Andrew’s 30-room Windsor mansion, which he will vacate.

Joe Little, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, told the BBC earlier this year that, given the lodge’s “splendor”, there was “a growing awareness that privately owned royal properties are actively seeking to support the Royal Family’s income streams”.

Wood Farm

This is one of the options that seems to be overlooked.

The farmhouse, described as “small and intimate” by former maid Teresa Thompson, has strong relations with Andrew’s parents.

Her father, the late Duke of Edinburgh, chose the secluded property as his permanent home when he retired from public life in 2017.

He and the late Queen were already staying there regularly, opting to open Sandringham House when it was just the two of them.

Anmer Hall was gifted by the late queen as a wedding gift to the Prince of Wales and Catherine, Princess of Wales in 2013; so this may be an unlikely choice.

He spent most of his school holidays in the 10-bedroom, World War II house at Sandringham, about 2 miles (3 km) east of the main house. They spend it in the grade* listed house.

The Georgian estate dates back to about 1802, but parts of it are much older and have formed part of the Sandringham estate since 1898.
