Urgent scam warning issued as fraudsters pose as Financial Conduct Authority

The Financial Behavior Authority (FCA) revealed that there was an increase in sophisticated frauds to consumers, fraudsters imitating the financial regulator.

Watchdog announced that individuals posing as a FCA representative in the first half of the year received 4,465 reports.

These criminals aim to defraud by forcing victims to deliver money or sensitive personal data, including bank account pins and passwords.

In a worrying way, approximately 480 people were successfully deceived by the transfer of funds to these fraudsters in the same six months.

Most of these reports are caused by two -thirds of individuals, 56 years and older, and show a certain fragility among the old demographic characteristics.

FCA emphasized two widespread scam tactics. One includes fraudsters claiming that the regulator saved funds from a crypto currency wallet illegally opened on behalf of the victim.

Another common method promises to target individuals who are already victims of credit fraud, and to recover FCA’s loss of money.

“They are trying to steal money from innocent victims by imitating FCA.

“We will never ask you to transfer money to us or to ask for precision banking information such as account pins and passwords. If you have doubt, check always.”

Aj Bell’s senior pension and savings expert Charlene Young said: “This new warning from FCA is now making terrible reading because the regulator is now imitating the regulator.

“The numbers represent the total number of reports made to FCA, where people realize that they are targeted and willing to report. However, the real volume of victims and initiatives will probably be much higher.

“By shedding, the most vulnerable people continue to be the most active targeted. Especially during the worst of Covid Pandemi, we saw the financial fragility and the cost of life that followed it.

“The plans to imitate is particularly attractive for these bad actors. A common technique includes a blue call, claiming that they have saved funds from the crypto currency wallets that claim to come from FCA and opened on behalf of the target.

“With the promise of a fall, fraudsters will then try to convince people to deliver sensitive bank information, including account access and PIN details.

“These schemes can also take a second bite of scammers. FCA has chosen an application called ‘Pig butchers’, where the victims are targeted by using romantic or other connection for ‘inflating them’ for a long -term investment fraud.

“After the money is delivered, the scammers continue to imitate FCA and offer to help their victims to save what they have lost.

“While people of all ages can be sacrificed to fraudsters, those who can access retirement pots – potentially the biggest entity they have – will inevitably be a main target. In fact, almost two -thirds of the reports made to FCA in the update are over the 55s.

“The best way to avoid being a victim of a scam is to know the tricks they use and not to deliver your money in the first place. We have listed five things that people can do to protect themselves from these frauds.”
