In the second shark attack in as many days in Sydney, an 11-year-old boy’s surfboard was bitten several times by a shark off the northern beaches on Monday morning.
Following the attack, which took place at the southern end of Dee Why beach, near the peninsula separating it from Curl Curl, the boy escaped injury and escaped to shore with many other surfers.
A Surf Life Saving NSW spokesman said the beach was closed due to dangerous water conditions at the time of the attack. It is expected to remain closed for up to 48 hours following the attack.
Surf lifeguards were deployed on jet skis to investigate the scene. A drone was also spotted monitoring the waters above Dee Why.

A piece of the boy’s surfboard was sent to NSW Fisheries to help identify the shark. Observer Witnesses reported observing what appeared to be a bull shark in the water, possibly up to 150 centimeters long.
Surf lifeguards gathered on a grassy reserve near Dee Why Surf Lifesaving Club on Monday afternoon; where one responder operated the drone while others watched over the ocean.
While a small number of beachgoers were swimming in the Dee Why rock pool, the coastal area was empty.
Others followed the search operation from nearby rocks and headlands.
A 12-year-old boy, who was fighting for his life in hospital after the attack, was bitten by a large bull shark off the coast of Sydney Harbor on Sunday afternoon.
The boy was bitten while swimming with friends at a popular jumping rock west of Shark Beach in Nielsen Park in Vaucluse at around 4.20pm and was rescued by friends and a quick-thinking police officer after the boy’s legs were injured.
More to come.
