The United States Men’s National Team has a chance to go the farthest they’ve ever gone in the World Cup, but they’ll have to do it without one of their best young stars.

Forward Patrick Agyemang, who scored six goals in 14 games for the USMNT, ruptured his Achilles on Monday and was eliminated from the tournament.

Agyemang was taken away on a stretcher while playing for Derby in the English second tier, one level below the Premier League. He was visibly emotional as he was led away with his right leg tied.

The 25-year-old represented the Stars and Stripes for the first time last year in training camp and in friendlies against Venezuela and Costa Rica, scoring in both competitions. Last summer, he made the CONCACAF Gold Cup team that saw the United States lose to Mexico in the final.

Agyemang played for the United States against Belgium and Portugal last week and scored against Belgium on March 28.

Team USA, one of the three host nations, drew a favorable bracket in December; Paraguay, Australia and one of four teams in UEFA Path C, which includes Türkiye, Slovakia, Kosovo and Romania, stand ahead of the knockout stage. The USA is the top-ranked team in the group.

The USMNT didn’t have much success in the World Cup. The team managed to reach the Round of 16 in 2010 and 2014, but failed to qualify for the tournament in 2018. The team, which returned to the Round of 16 four years ago, failed to advance out of the Copa América group stage on home soil last year.

After finishing third in the first World Cup in 1930, the furthest they have reached since then is the 2002 quarter-finals.

11 of the 16 home stadiums are in the United States, including the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
