UK to be battered by more rain and flooding in new weather warning after Storm Goretti

The Met Office has issued a fresh yellow weather warning for rain in parts of the UK as the country reels from the aftermath of Storm Goretti.

The Met Office warned that heavy rain on saturated ground could lead to some surface water flooding on Thursday.

Areas affected include: London and South East England and South West England.

The forecaster says up to 30mm of rain could fall in just a few hours, with up to 50mm falling in some isolated areas.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said: “Heavy and persistent rain will be seen across southern England on Thursday, with a yellow rain warning in place for most of the day.

“This is because the low pressure area gradually moves in from the south. 20-30 mm of rain is likely in a wide area within the warning area, and 40-50 mm is likely to occur in some places.

“This falls on saturated ground for many, increasing vulnerability to such rainfall amounts. The warning highlights possible travel disruption and the possibility of flooding in some locations.”

These weather conditions can cause flooding of homes and businesses, as well as travel delays for buses and trains.

The Met Office has urged people to check if their property is at risk of flooding and to prepare an emergency flood kit. It is recommended to check road conditions before traveling to avoid delays.

It follows a period of heavy snow last week when Storm Goretti brought winds of almost 100mph and a rare red warning was issued by forecasters for “dangerous, gusty” winds in South West England.

Some areas were under up to 30cm of water last week amid warnings of the “worst snowfall in a decade”.

The storm blew across the Channel towards the UK on Thursday evening and Friday, battering the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall with hurricane-force winds.

Met Office’s five-day weather forecast

Today:

On Wednesday, the weather will be quite cloudy in the far south, then scattered rain will fall in the north. Otherwise, it will be a bright but cold start, apart from a few showers in the north, but by lunchtime the rain will move towards the north-west areas.

Tonight:

Forecasters predict the rain will be heavy at times, moving eastward but potentially falling briefly as snow in the north. Clear skies and showers follow in the west.

Thursday:

It will probably be sunny and showery in the northern regions on Thursday. There will also be more clouds in the south and heavy rain at times will gradually spread to the north, with winds later strengthening in the southeast. The system will be accompanied by strong winds in the southeast; This will become unstable on Thursday and into Friday for many in the south of England.

Outlook from Friday to Sunday:

Towards the end of the week, wind and rain are expected to be effective in the northeast on Friday, followed by sunshine and showers. The heavy rain is expected to continue on Saturday and become more isolated on Sunday. Temperatures will be around average for most.

This is a breaking story, more to come…
