Pope Leo hits back at Trump jibes insisting Europe is ‘crucial’ | World | News

Pope Leo XIV has harshly rebuked the Trump administration for what he described as attempts to “dismantle” the historic transatlantic alliance, while insisting that Europe must play a central role in any Ukraine peace deal.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is currently touring European capitals to rally support for Kiev, the American pontiff touched on the urgent need for a ceasefire and outlined the Vatican’s ongoing work to help repatriate Ukrainian children removed by Russian forces.

Asked about America’s peace offer and concerns that European nations were being marginalized in the negotiations, Leo responded as he left his summer home in Castel Gandolfo, emphasizing that European participation is essential to reaching any solution.

“Given that the war is in Europe, it is unrealistic to make a peace agreement without involving Europe in the talks,” he said.

“Guarantees are also sought for security today and in the future. Europe needs to be a part of this, and unfortunately not everyone understands this.

“But I think there is a great opportunity for European leaders to unite and look for solutions together.”

According to Zelensky, the peace framework being discussed with American and European partners consists of three separate documents: a 20-article framework agreement, a second document outlining security guarantees, and a third document focusing on the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Leo was questioned about America’s peace proposal for Ukraine but appeared to address broader concerns about the Trump administration’s stance on transatlantic relations.

The Trump administration’s recently released national security strategy points to a preference for strengthening ties with Russia while raising doubts about the US-European partnership.

Leo commented that what he saw “will create a great change in the alliance that has been real between Europe and the United States for many years.”

He also noted that some of US President Donald Trump’s statements indicate an attempt “to dismantle what I think should be an alliance today and in the future.”

Although some Americans support this approach, Leo said, “I think a lot of people will look at things from a different perspective.”

The Vatican has sought to maintain neutrality in the conflict in Russia while providing solidarity and practical assistance to those it describes as “martyr” Ukrainian people.

Leo has had three meetings with Zelensky so far and at least one phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The American pastor called for a ceasefire and specifically called on Russia to make conciliatory gestures towards peace.

The Vatican also worked to secure the return of Ukrainian children removed by Russian authorities; Leo met with some of these repatriated young people at the Vatican last month.
