Cars to be banned from Oxford Street ‘as quickly as possible’

Sir Sadiq Khan announced that the plans to ban traffic from a part of Oxford Street will be applied as “as quickly as possible” because of the support of the “majority of Londonal”.
According to Khan’s office, 66 percent of the participants in a consultation supported the pedestrian plan. A separate Yougov survey conducted in September 2024 showed that 63% of the Londonal were in favor of the project.
Oxford Street is one of the most intense shopping areas in the world with about half a million visitors every day.
Khan wants to ban the vehicles extending 0.7 miles between Oxford circus and marble belt, which has more changes to Tottenham Court Road.
Later in this year, detailed offers will be consulted for traffic.

The latest proposals depend on the permission of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner as the Minister of Foreign Affairs for housing, communities and local government.
The aim is to create this at the beginning of next year.
Sir Sadiq said: “Oxford Street has suffered for years, so there is a need for urgent action to give a new life to the high street of our country.
Or It is clear that the vast majority of London and large enterprises support our exciting plans, so I am pleased to confirm that we will progress as soon as possible.
“We want to rejuvenate Oxford Street, establishing this as a global leader for first class, accessible, Yaya Street shopping, leisure and outdoor activities.
“This will help to withdraw more international visitors and to direct new investment and employment, growth and economic welfare for decades.”
Rayner said: uz We want to see that Oxford Street is a successful place for tourists and Londons, and so we are glad to achieve the brave suggestions of the Mayor of London.
“We will support the Mayor in realizing this ambitious vision that will help breathe a new life to Oxford Street – we will invest, create new jobs for the local people and support economic growth in the capital.”
Adam Hug, the leader of the Labor -controlled Westminster Municipal Assembly, said, “Although the official decision of the mayor is not the result of the city council, it is far from being unexpected and the future of Oxford Street is important.
“Since the new approach of the mayor’s new approach was opened to the public last autumn, Westminster has worked with a great London authority (GLA) to ensure that the Oxford Street plan meets the needs of businesses, visitors and residents more closely.
“Since 2022, Oxford Street has returned to life after PANDEMI. This is the retail level of retail, which existing brands spend 118 million £ £ 118 million to redesign their stores in the last 12 months.
