Health professionals failed Graham Thorpe, coroner says

In the months before taking his own life, there were failures in the care of former British cricket player Graham Thorpe.

Mr. Thorpe was not perceived by health professionals as “in the case of crisis” after saying that he wanted to “help him to end his life” weeks before his wife died.

The 55 -year -old was considered one of the best British players in his generation.

After he was shot at a train station in Surrey, he died on the morning of 4 August 2024.

After losing his job as a stroke coach, he heard that he had “turned into depression” and tried to get his own life on another occasion.

After Mr Thorpe missed the appointment with the community mental health team on June 28, 2024, Care Coordinator Katie Johnson spoke with Mrs. Thorpe on the phone that said she had her husband. “He wants help to end his life constantly”The court heard.

Later, Mrs. Johnson spoke to Mr. Thorpe, who told him that he hadn’t “went out” for a while, and “he didn’t see the point of being here”, but he didn’t have plans to act on suicide thoughts.

An investigation was carried out by NHS Foundation Trust, a partnership of Surrey and boundaries.

Dr. “Mr. Thorpe’s appointment on June 28, 2024,” Mr. Thorpe’s presentation was compatible with the previous presentations and was not perceived as a crisis situation.

When asked if a appointment arrangement was an appropriate response within two weeks, Dr Burguul said that it would be appropriate to allow Mr. Thorpe to express two weeks in the absence of “active intention” or “active plan”.

The court said that Mr. Thorpe was not at the level of requiring intervention of his home treatment team.

In the psychiatrist, if there was a face -to -face assessment for Mr. Thorpe – he was asked if there was any evidence that there would be a different result, and “No” replied.

The investigation recorded a letter that Mr. Thorpe was discharged from a private hospital in July 2022 and that a neuropsychologist should be identified to provide more support.

‘A real shock’

Considering that the speech was on the phone, it was asked whether it was appropriate to see Mr. Thorpe very quickly in the psychiatrist.

He said to the court: “In his wisdom, yes, a home visit would be clinically specified.”

This was never made by a special provider or GP, and Dr Burguul told the court that it should be investigated in June 2024.

When asked if there is any neuropsychological effect that may affect the appointment of the cricketist, psychiatrist said: “This is a possibility, yes,” he said.

Mr. Thorpe said the cause of death was recorded by a pathologist as multiple injuries.
