Moderate quake hits Himachal districts; tremors felt in neighbouring States

Tremors were felt in Kangra, Chamba and adjoining districts of Himachal Pradesh following the moderate earthquake of magnitude 5.0 that hit the region on Friday night, June 5, 2026.
The meteorological office stated that the depth of the earthquake, which occurred about 40 kilometers away from Dharamsala near the Kangra-Chamba border at 22.04, was 5 kilometers and that the epicenter was near Dhar Godoi in Kangra.
Officials said people in Dharamsala and nearby areas rushed out of their homes in panic after the tremors were felt, but no loss of life or property has been reported from any part of the state so far.
Kangra and Chamba districts fall under Seismic Zone 5 with high risk of damage.
According to reports, tremors were also felt in Chandigarh and parts of Punjab and Haryana.
Baldev Chand, a resident of Chandigarh who lives on the second floor of a three-storey building, said he felt a slight tremor while getting ready to sleep around 10 am.
“The tremors only lasted a few seconds,” he said.
