Mundys Plumbing: Byford plumbers praised after saving baby pug from sewer line

A puppy is lucky to survive thanks to the actions of a plumbing company and his heroic apprentice.

Mundys Plumbing and Gas is a family owned business based in Byford and has been serving the Perth community for 15 years.

A strange phone call on Tuesday prompted crews to take action after a concerned owner shared his suspicions that his puppy pug was heading into sewer pipes.

Third-year plumbing apprentice Daniel Sanders had just arrived at the office during the interview when his boss approached him about the situation.

The apprentice told PerthNow: “The boss came up to me and told me to grab the camera and get to this job, and I said, ‘What’s going on there?’ I asked.

“He said a dog had fallen into the sewer. I thought he was joking, but I think even the boss was a little shocked.”

Dog owner Daniel immediately rushed to the Byford property to help his owner in his time of need.

After arriving, the company discovered that a checkpoint had been accidentally left open by a previous tradesman working on site.

The puglet had used the opening to meander towards the main toilet connection.

Daniel sprang into action and immediately sent his sewer inspection camera into the pipes to locate the cub.

After trying many angles and having “no luck,” the 20-year-old began pointing the camera toward the street and made a shocking discovery: two beady eyes staring into the camera.

“I sent the camera the other way and sure enough, there it was,” he said of the heartwarming moment.

“Honestly, I looked at him for about 20 seconds just to make sure he was alive – and thank God he was.

“Eventually we had to pull the toilet, reach our whole arm into the toilet pipe and pull the dog out.”

The entire rescue effort, from retrieving the phone to retrieving the puppy, took the Mundys team two hours.

Although the little cub was stuck in the sewer line for hours, he was mostly unharmed from the close encounter.

“He was shaky and hungry for a while, but that was pretty much it,” Daniel said.

“I’m surprised he survived, to be honest. It’s pretty brutal.”

Mundys shared a Facebook post about the incredible rescue, praising the third-year apprentice for his “skilled” work.

The plumbing service described the rescue as “an absolute first” for them, even joking that they should add animal rescue services to the mix, but said they were “very grateful” for the positive outcome.

Daniel reiterated how rare situations like this are, saying plumbers have “never seen anything moving or living in the drain.”

Locals were quick to praise the company for their noble work in saving the creature.

“Omg what a save from Mundys,” one shopper wrote.

Another said: “What a stressful but amazing outcome, well done Dan the Man!”

The puppy’s owner also shared that he “can’t thank the company enough” for their heroism during the “hectic” situation.

One person even joked that the pug should be renamed Mundys as a tribute to the plumbing services – but it looks like the owner was one step ahead.

He wrote on social media that the pup was named “Lil Dan” in memory of the shopkeeper who rescued him from the sewer line.

Daniel told PerthNow that the owner personally shared the news with him about the post-rescue naming honor.

“He was so excited, it was absolutely amazing,” he said.

The third-year apprentice also revealed that his colleagues were “jealous” of his role in the incredible saga.

“They’re jealous because they can’t go and get recognition,” he joked.
