Treasury announces more sanctions on Iranian officials over protest crackdown

As the threat of a possible US attack on Iran looms on the horizon, President Donald Trump’s administration announced additional sanctions targeting Iranian individuals.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is “taking additional action against Iranian officials responsible for the regime’s brutal repression of its own people,” the Treasury Department announced Friday.

“Among the officials sanctioned today is Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni Kalagari, who oversees the Law Enforcement Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran (LEF), a key organization responsible for the deaths of thousands of peaceful protesters,” the ministry said.

“OFAC also designated criminal Iranian investor Babak Morteza Zanjani, who embezzled billions of dollars from Iranian oil revenues that previously belonged to the Iranian people and have never been fully recovered. Zanjani, who escaped prison for the purpose of laundering money for the regime, provided financial support to major projects supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian regime more broadly,” the ministry said. he added.

The Treasury Department also noted that OFAC determined that two digital asset exchanges linked to Zanjani “processed large amounts of funds associated with IRGC-connected counterparties.”

The announcement comes as the Trump administration prepares for the possibility of military action against Iran.
