Asda gives out free £5.70 sun cream until June 17 – but there’s 1 catch | UK | News

Asda is offering free sunscreen to help some customers avoid making the same mistake as Declan Rice, who looked particularly rosy in England’s latest team photos.

The England midfielder was noticeably sunburned in pre-tournament photos, with his watch strap line and pink forehead catching the attention of football fans on social media. Players from all 48 countries traveled to acclimate ahead of the tournament, but Declan Rice revealed his mother told him off for forgetting to wear sunscreen.

He joked to the BBC: “I think everyone has seen those photos… I was so red in that photoshoot, my mum was killing me.”

Asda is now offering a £5.70 sunscreen to people named Declan so their namesake doesn’t make the same mistake.

Asda Rewards users named Declan will be able to claim a free bottle of sunscreen via the app until kick-off of England’s match against Croatia at 9pm on Wednesday 17 June. Offer valid on one 200ml bottle of SPF50 Asda Protection Sensitive Formula Sun Lotion.

Asda sunscreen buyer Alyssa Ashford said: “We’ve all been there – a bit of sunshine, a busy day and before you know it you’ve caught the sun. “Our maternal instincts kicked in after hearing Declan Rice get a scolding from his mum.

“We just wanted to step in and make sure Declans was protected everywhere and didn’t make the same mistake.

“Whether they’re watching the football or counting down to England’s big game, I hope there will be fewer mums having to say harsh words to their Declan.”

To use it, customers called Declan need to log into the Asda Rewards app, go to their Rewards and claim their free sunscreen before 9pm on Wednesday.

Clement Turpin has been appointed as England’s referee for the inaugural World Cup on Wednesday. He was once labeled a “Grade E” official by head coach Thomas Tuchel, but has taken charge of several high-profile matches, including the 2022 Champions League final.
