US Supreme Court petition seeks to overturn 2015 legalization of same-sex marriage

Filing suggests that Davis’s refusal to submit marriage licenses is protected under the right to first change and freedom of religion.
The petition comes in the midst of renewed discussions in some religious and political groups about the precedent. In June, the southern Baptists voted to reversal the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision to reversal the prohibition of gay marriage, including an official call.
Public opinion poll shows changing attitudes in the last decade. Gallup reported in 2015 that 60 percent of Americans support homosexual marriage. This figure rose to 70 percent in 2025. However, Republican support for marriage of the same gender fell from 55 percent to 41 percent in 2025 in 2021. The Supreme Court has not yet shown Davis’s case. If it was accepted, it would be the first time that justice has agreed to overthrow the legalization of homosexual marriage since the original decision.
