NYC’s air turns unhealthy from Canada wildfires; how long will it stay?

Duman drifted south from forest fires in Central Canada, triggered air quality warnings in the northeast of the United States. On Saturday, July 26, both New Hampshire and New York Air Quality Action Days announced that conditions may be unhealthy, especially for sensitive groups.

In New Hampshire, the Ministry of Environment Services issued a warning after detecting high smoke levels. Wind circulation in clockwise pushes the smoke from Canada’s forest fires to the state. According to David Healy, the Air Resources Department is quoted by the Chief Scientist 9 News, such a day of action takes place several times every summer.

“When this happens, we should inform the public that air quality can be unhealthy for certain groups,” Healy said.

State officials use the data obtained from tracking stations to assess weather conditions.
When a threshold is reached, they give estimates and public advice. Medical specialists were also stimulated because hospitals tend to see an increase in respiratory complaints during poor weather quality events.

Consultancy for New York and Beyond

In New York, the State Health Ministry released a similar air quality health consultancy on Saturday, including New York, Long Island, Hudson Valley and Adirondacks. According to a CBS report, the Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to vary between 100 and 135, which is a level that is considered to be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Authorities advise the residents to avoid exhausting open -air activities and keep the windows closed. If possible, air cleaners are also recommended.

The counseling comes in the midst of possible market storms that can affect a hot weekend and how long the smoke lasts.

The warning is active from noon to midnight, but it can be extended if conditions continue.

Access and health effect of smoke

Forest fires in Canada, especially in the British Kolumbi, this season has already burned more than a million acres. The resulting smoke contains fine particles that can irritate the lungs and deteriorate asthma or heart disease.

The effect extends from busy cities such as Manhattan to silent rural trails in Adirondacks. National Weather Service recommends to receive medical aid if symptoms such as wheezing or shortness of breath deteriorate.

Canadian forest fire did not affect the region for the first time. In June 2023, similar events caused New York’s AQI to rise to over 200 and turned the sky to orange and the school closure.

This weekend situation is less violent but still a concern. Both New York and New Hampshire take advantage of past experiences to respond quickly and protect vulnerable population.
