Danone has recalled several batches of Aptamil and Cow & Gate baby food due to the possible presence of a toxin linked to poisoning in children, the Food Standards Agency said. The latest recall is an extension of the Aptamil First Baby Food product recall issued on January 23 of this year.
The issue only affects batches listed in the recall notice, in addition to the product involved in Danone’s previous recall. The concern centers on the potential presence of cerulidine, a toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus, in affected crops. As Cereulide is extremely heat stable, it is unlikely to be destroyed during cooking or when preparing baby food, according to NHS guidance, and ingestion can trigger symptoms very quickly. The agency explained that illnesses caused by this toxin typically include sudden nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

A notice was displayed in all retail stores selling these products. The agency explained: “These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they purchase the products. Please see the attached notice.”
FSA Chief Executive Katie Pettifer said: “Please check if you have Aptamil, Cow & Gate and SMA brand food at home. It is unlikely that the affected batches are still on store shelves but you may have them in your cupboard. If you have an affected batch do not use it. You can return it to the store and replace it with an unaffected batch.
“If you are feeding your baby with someone from the affected groups, stop using it and switch to an unaffected mixture of the same brand or another brand. If your baby has been prescribed formula, talk to the pharmacist or doctor before switching.
“The risk of cereulide contamination at these levels causing harm to children is low, although consuming it can cause symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. If your baby has recently consumed an affected batch and you are worried about symptoms, contact your doctor or call NHS 111.”
