Man charged with murder after woman struck by car in Reservoir
A Reservoir man has appeared in court charged with murder after a woman was hit by a car in Melbourne’s northern suburbs on Friday night.
Emergency services were called to Seston Street in the Reservoir at 7.40pm, where a 53-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Luke Rainey, 44, was arrested and has since been charged with one count of murder.
Forensic investigators could be seen behind police tape looking inside a white car that was stopped on the road on Friday night, according to Nine News.
A police spokesman said the 53-year-old and the 44-year-old knew each other.
Rainey, who appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via video link on Saturday morning, was wearing a dark green shirt and sitting with his hands on his knees.
“I have two children full-time. I have full custody,” he told the court.
His lawyer told the court Rainey did not have any significant mental health issues, but that it would be prudent for his client to contact a custody nurse due to the length of time until the next hearing.
Hudson said that there was a lot of evidence at the scene that needed to be processed by forensic medicine, which would delay the presentation of the police’s evidence delivery report to the court.
“This is the biggest crime anyone can face… There’s a lot of reconstruction that needs to be done by forensics,” he said.
Rainey will not be able to apply for bail due to the nature of the charge and will return to court on July 1.
