CEC Gyanesh Kumar says just 500 appeals filed after Assam electoral rolls revision

Kumar said the statistic of just 500 objections out of the total 2.5 crore voters exemplifies the success of the Special Revision exercise in Assam.
The Chief Electoral Commissioner went to the polls on a two-day visit. He was accompanied by election commission members Dr. He was accompanied by SS Sandhu and Vivek Joshi and other senior officials of ECI.
He said that while ECI has carried out Special Intensive Revision in other poll-bound states, Special Intensive Revision has been carried out in Assam as the publication of National Register of Citizens (NRC) is in the final stage in Assam.
“The intention behind SR was to ensure that all eligible voters were included in the electoral rolls and that the names of all ineligible voters could be removed from the electoral rolls”.
CEC said they are reviewing the situation in Assam and the state’s poll preparations, but the ECI in Delhi will finalize it after a meeting.
However, he said that the ECI will keep the Rongali Bihu festival, the most popular festival in Assam, in mind while announcing the election dates. He said the elections will be held in 31,486 polling stations in the state and added that there will be not more than 1,200 voters in each polling booth to make the voting process a smoother experience.
Kumar also said that for the first time, the ECI has decided to make the elections more transparent by deciding to hold live webcasts at all polling stations in the state during the elections and will feature color photographs of the candidates for better understanding of the voters.
According to the final voter rolls released by the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, there are a total of 2.49 crore eligible voters in Assam, including 1,24,75,583 female and 1,24,82,213 male voters. An additional 343 voters of the third gender were registered in the final voter rolls.
