-Bhopal: Farmers in a village in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday looted a truck loaded with urea that arrived at the local fertilizer distribution centre, police said.

A video showing local villagers, including women and girls, looting urea bags from a truck in Jatara village in Tikamgarh district has gone viral.

Ram Kumar Soni, registrar of the local mandi, lodged a complaint with Jatara police station regarding the incident.

According to police, two truckloads of urea arrived at the local mandi serving as a fertilizer distribution center in Madhya Pradesh in Jatara village to sell to local farmers.

Police said farmers became restless after waiting for urea for a week and some of them started taking bags of urea from the truck when it reached the mandi.

Others joined them to loot urea from the truck, police said.

Police said around 40-50 bags of urea were looted by some farmers before the intervention of mandi officials.

The matter is being investigated by the police.

In another development, the issue of alleged fertilizer shortage in the state arose in the State Assembly on Thursday, with Congress MLAs demanding the state government to take immediate steps to resolve the alleged urea crisis.

He said distribution of fertilizer to farmers in mandis was subjected to a cumbersome process where farmers had to queue to get tokens and then a date was fixed a week later for the fertilizer to be delivered to them.

He said that the process caused a delay in the delivery of fertilizer to farmers, which led to farmers’ unrest.
