Two loco trains collide in Uttarakhand’s Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydroelectric project tunnel, 60 injured

Around 60 people were injured when a locomotive carrying workers and officials collided with a freight train in the Pipalkoti tunnel of the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project tunnel in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand late on Tuesday evening (December 30, 2025), officials said.

Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar said that a total of 109 people were on the train at the time of the accident, which occurred late in the evening, and 60 people were injured.

He said all people were rescued and the injured were in good condition.

DM said that a train carrying people and materials collided while moving in the Pipalkoti tunnel of the project built by THDC (India).

According to officials, locomotives are used to transport workers, civil servants and construction materials inside the tunnels.

Chamoli Sub-District Magistrate said that 10 injured were sent to the district hospital in Gopeshwar for treatment.

This 444 megawatt hydropower project is being built on the Alaknanda River between Helang and Pipalkoti in Chamoli district. The project will produce 111 megawatts of electricity through four turbines. It is aimed to be completed by next year.
