Sonam Wangchuk’s wife writes to President Murmu for his release, seeks intervention on ‘witch-hunt’

Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitangali J. Angmo, reached President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, to seek the intervention of the climate activist in Jodhpur prison in Rajasthan since September 24th in Ladakh.
In a three -page letter addressed to the President, Mr. Wangchuk’s wife claimed that he had been “witch” against his husband because he had adopted the cause of people in the last four years, and said he was completely unaware of his husband’s condition.

Angmo said, “We demand that Wangchuk, a person who can never threaten anyone and cannot leave his nation alone, to be released unconditionally. He devoted his life to serving the brave sons of Ladakh’s land and standing in solidarity with the Indian army in the defense of our great nation.
Mr. Wangchuk was detained two days after violent clashes in the town of Leh, within the scope of the National Security Law (NSA) on September 26th and died of four people and injured the points of others. Violence began during protests that supported demands, including the inclusion of Ladakh Devlet and the region’s sixth program of the constitution.

Mr Wangchuk’s detainees called “illegal”, and said that it was informed by a station house officer.
“I was also told that the officer would explain my legal rights. Even if this has not been done so far. I was shocked and ruined,” he said.

“I am not aware of whether fresh clothes and basic opportunities are given, including the drugs he needs on a daily basis, especially in September 15 days after 15 days that weakened him physically.”
He said that Mr. Wangchuk, who calls the treatment “pitiful”, talked about climate change, educational reforms and base innovation, and has raised his voice for the rise of an ecologically fragile tribal belt in a peaceful Gandhian style for the last four years.
“The Ladakh land is a strategic mistake to build strong boundaries with solidarity and peaceful life, not just a sin, but not only a sin,” he said.

Mrs. Angmo, the founder and general manager of the Himalayan Alternative Learning Institute (HIAL), said that he was covered by CRPF supervision and referred to a communication responsible for the special investigation team and that he was looking for details of the students and staff residing in Hial.
He also said that two members of the institute were detained three days ago.
