Google on Tuesday announced a massive investment of US$15 billion over the next five years to set up a gigawatt-scale Artificial Intelligence (AI) center in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the company’s largest AI center outside the United States. The announcement came during Google’s ‘Bharat AI Shakti’ event in New Delhi. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian emphasized that the newest Vishakhapatnam AI center will be connected to Google’s global network. He also shared that the ‘Andhra Pradesh Artificial Intelligence Center’ will become Google’s largest AI Center outside the US and the company announced that it will invest US$ 15 billion in the next five years. “We will bring our submarine cable infrastructure here and connect it to our global network. This will not only act as a landing station for multiple cables but will also provide a digital backbone connecting different parts of India. We are not only bringing artificial intelligence technology but also a digital infrastructure. We will run our infrastructure through our subsea cable and network connectivity hub,” he added. He also shared that the new gigawatt-scale center will be part of Google’s global network of artificial intelligence centers covering 12 countries. Speaking at the announcement event, Kurian emphasized Google’s deep roots in India. “This is the largest AI center we will invest in anywhere in the world outside the US. It represents a capital investment of US$15 billion over the next five years,” he said. He further added, “We are incredibly proud of what today represents. Google has been in India for a long time. This is our 21st year here. We have 14,000 employees across five locations and launched our cloud solutions in India a few years ago. We also have two.
