Dr Subhash Chandra is a well-known name in the media world today. He is considered the pioneer of India’s first private satellite television channel. On his birthday today, Dr Chandra’s story stands as a reminder of how one individual’s vision can transform an entire industry. Born in Haryana’s Hisar district, Dr Chandra started his life as a young trader in his family’s grain business. He later went on to build one of India’s most influential media and entertainment empires.
But Dr Chandra’s rise was never linear. Initial challenges were shaped by timely risks and a broad vision. Dr Chandra was breaking new ground even before startup culture. In packaging, theme parks, news broadcasting, satellite television, education and digital platforms. He remains one of India’s most renowned business architects today. He is now considered the Father of Indian Television.
Early life of Dr Subhash Chandra
He grew up in a traditional trading family in Adampur Mandi, Haryana. Even during his school days, he was learning the discipline of running a small business: negotiating prices, understanding supply chains and managing people. This initial revelation shaped his belief that an entrepreneur is born in real-world struggle, not in the boardroom.
First big leap
Even before Dr Chandra transformed entertainment, he first transformed the packaging industry. In the 1980s, when India was still dependent on imported laminated tubes used in the toothpaste, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries, Dr. Chandra sensed an opportunity. He founded Essel Propack, which introduced laminated tubes to the Indian market. The venture became one of the world’s largest manufacturers of laminated tubes and demonstrated what would become its signature style.
Introduction to Indian television
In 1992, the visionary challenged Doordarshan’s monopoly and signaled a decisive shift in Indian media consumption. He founded Zee TV in 1992 and expanded the network to nearly 90 channels. Over the years, Zee has grown into a vast network of entertainment, movies, regional channels, music and news. Today, Dr Chandra’s flagship brand Zee has evolved into a global content powerhouse. It has a presence in broadcast, digital, film, music and live events.
Creating a diverse media group
- After Zee TV, Dr Subhash Chandra quickly expanded into industries like Zee News and WION. He believed that India should have its own global narrative.
- Dish TV and Siti Networks – accelerated the transition from analogue to digital with DTH and cable digitization and brought modern broadcasting into the interior of the country.
- Zee Learn and Education Initiatives – Kidzee has envisioned education models that can reach central India, especially Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns, through Mount Litera Zee School and Zee Learn.
Essel World and Water Kingdom
Dr Chandra created a new culture of entertainment for urban families by opening India’s first large-scale amusement parks. These initiatives strengthened his identity as someone who founded not just companies but also industries.
