Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis traded to Heat in blockbuster deal

The Milwaukee Bucks capped off a historic run by sending two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat to give Milwaukee its first NBA championship in 50 years.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Miami has signed Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and will acquire Antetokounmpo and Portis in exchange for Kasparas Jakucionis; He will also receive three future first-round picks, the 13th overall pick in Tuesday’s draft, a future pick swap and a second-round pick.

The Boston Celtics and Heat have gained ground as leading suitors in the Giannis sweepstakes on the eve of the NBA Draft.

The trade comes after years of uncertainty around Milwaukee’s direction following the 2023 departure of championship-winning head coach Mike Budenholzer, capping a steady decline that has resulted in the Bucks missing the 2026 playoffs.

31-year-old Antetokounmpo won the franchise’s first championship in 50 years in 2021 and solidified his place among the best players in team history. He was named one of the NBA’s 75 best players ever and was a two-time MVP and Finals MVP.

But after several disappointing post-championship seasons and an injury-plagued 2025-26 campaign, the Bucks have opted to turn to the future. The team sidelined Giannis against his will towards the end of the season.

Instead of sticking with an expensive roster with limited flexibility, Milwaukee took advantage of Antetokounmpo’s value.

Miami emerged from a crowded field of suitors to acquire one of the league’s biggest stars, signaling Riley’s willingness to continue sacrificing future assets for the sake of another championship. And Heat president Pat Riley has finally achieved the franchise cornerstone he’s been chasing for years.
