Pro-Israel convoy descends on Sydney Harbour as pro-Palestine protesters march through CBD
As thousands of pro-Palestinian protests descended on the city of Sydney, a convoy of boats urging Australians to “stand against anti-Semitism” set out for Sydney Harbour.
About a dozen boats bearing slogans urging Australians to “stand together” sailed near Luna Park on Sunday, with protesters waving Australian flags along the shore.
This comes as thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters marched into the Sydney CBD after a planned protest at the Opera House was canceled by the Supreme Court.
The event is supported by Never Again Is Now, a pro-Israel Christian fundamentalist group, as well as Stand With Us and the Zionist Council of NSW.
Video posted by Never Again is Now showed a dozen protesters outside Luna Park chanting “Australian, Australian, we are young and we are free.”
A woman can be heard shouting: “Go, Australians. Go.”
The event comes after protest groups supporting both Israel and Palestine celebrated two years of war in Gaza throughout the week.
More than 60,000 people have been killed in Israel’s assault on the coastal enclave of Gaza since Hamas’ offensive on October 7, 2023.
In August, nearly 90,000 people, including Julian Assange and Greens and Labor MPs, marched on the Sydney Harbor Bridge, WikiLeaks found.
NSW Premier Chris Minns has staunchly opposed the protest across the bridge and backed police in opposing the application for Sunday’s Opera House rally.
