Israeli president lays wreath at Bondi as court challenge looms; Coalition unites again
One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce echoed US President Donald Trump’s words in 2018, outlining his principles on immigration to Australia, saying some immigrants to Australia come from “shithole” countries.
Appearing in the fifth episode of Karl Stefanovic’s podcast released last night, Joyce said the decision-making process behind setting immigration targets was “the wrong way”.
“They should be saying: ‘How many houses do you have now? How many hospitals are working well? How many schools are not crowded? What kind of people do you need? Do you need the unemployed to have babies? Or do you need builders?’ And then you say, ‘We can bring in this many people,'” Joyce said.
“You want to live in Australia… there are two things you can’t be: on the crime pages or on social security,” Joyce said.
“I don’t care if you come from the Vatican, Central America, Central Africa or the middle of Europe, if you’re going to show up… if you’re going to cause trouble, you stay where you are.
“If you’re nostalgic for where you came from and you say, ‘I really want Australia to be like the shithole I came from,’ you go back there,” he said.
In 2018, Trump referred to Haiti and African countries as “shithole countries” when discussing where he would prefer immigrants to come to the United States.
The first episode of Stefanovic’s podcast, published two weeks ago, included an interview with Pauline Hanson. Stefanovic is the presenter of the Nine channel, which is owned by Nine Entertainment, which also owns this imprint.
