Man City deliver ominous statement on Pep Guardiola’s landmark day as Liverpool suffer

The fabric is a transformative symbol of this new City.

The 23-year-old has transformed from an unquestionably talented but sometimes maddeningly inconsistent winger into the brilliant catalyst behind many of his best moments this season.

It’s been a terrible time for Conor Bradley, who was outstanding in Liverpool’s Champions League win against Real Madrid. Bradley was distraught by Doku’s speed and physical presence; but in this form no one could overcome the Belgian.

The texture was absolutely unstoppable; He is now a fully blossomed player after finally adjusting to Guardiola’s high demands following a £55.4million move from Rennes in August 2023.

Rayan Cherki has added finesse to the midfield, while Phil Foden has been at his best and Bernardo Silva still has all the old guile to keep City moving forward with his direction.

It was a resounding win by all accounts and gave Arsenal and their manager Mikel Arteta (former Guardiola’s assistant) plenty of food for thought during the international break.

For Liverpool, this meant a return to the world with a bang after the recent rise.

They currently sit eighth, eight points behind Arsenal and four behind City, but their momentum has stalled. Liverpool’s five defeats this season now dwarf the four they suffered when they won the title.

And there are troubling signs that Liverpool have yet to adapt to the influx of new talent worth around £450m arriving in the summer.

One of the successes, Hugo Ekitike, was subdued here while fellow £125million striker Alexander Isak became an unused substitute after being sidelined for three weeks with a groin injury.

It has been another day of pain and disappointment for £116million playmaker Florian Wirtz, whose struggles were made worse by the taunts from Manchester City fans who recalled how he turned down an offer to join Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen at the Etihad Stadium.

Wirtz is clearly struggling with the physicality of the Premier League at this stage. The talent is clearly evident, but most of the time he is easily shrugged off when in possession.

This is something he will have to get used to and act against. When he was replaced by Federico Chiesa seven minutes later came the inevitable barrage of Wirtz’s enthusiastic supporters chanting “What a waste of money”.

Meanwhile, Guardiola enjoyed the victory but was looking forward to the next matches after the international period.

“Rest now and come back with energy,” he said, before reflecting on the path that has brought him to this stage of an extraordinary coaching life.

“I think my time at Barcelona B laid the foundation for a lot of things. Realizing that I was able to do this and learn a lot.

“I will never forget the players from that first season. It was very special for me to make 1,000 appearances in front of my family, especially against Liverpool. I have great respect for that club.”

This was Guardiola’s day of celebration. And Manchester City made it an opportunity to remember.
