Chinese President Xi Jinping criticises US over ongoing tensions with Venezuela: ‘Unilateral, bullying actions’

In his statements seen as criticism of the US moves in Venezuela, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on major powers to respect national sovereignty and warned against unilateral actions. China condemned the use of force, supported the Maduro government and called for multilateral cooperation.
Chinese President Xi Jinping gave a message criticizing the latest actions of the United States, calling on major world powers to respect the development paths chosen by individual nations. His remarks come against a backdrop of increasing global instability and reports of US military action in Venezuela, including the detention of President Nicolás Maduro.
Warning Against Unilateralism
According to the statement made by the Chinese foreign ministry, Xi said that the world is experiencing uncertainty and turmoil at a level not seen in a century. He warned that unilateral actions and coercive tactics by powerful countries were eroding the foundations of the international order. Although Xi did not directly name the United States, the timing and context of his comments suggested a clear rebuke of Washington’s approach toward Venezuela.
Xi emphasized that the use of force and pressure policies undermine global stability and weaken trust between countries. He called on influential countries to act responsibly and respect the sovereignty and internal affairs of others.
Multilateral Focus Emphasized in Talks with Ireland
Xi made these remarks during his meetings with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin; Here, both leaders emphasized their common support for multilateralism. He said China and Ireland, despite differences in size and geography, can work together to overcome global challenges through dialogue and cooperation.
The Chinese president emphasized the importance of maintaining the authority of the United Nations and strengthening international institutions. He argued that global governance systems should evolve to be fairer, more inclusive and more balanced, reflecting the interests of a wider range of countries rather than a select few.
Beijing’s Determined Stance on Venezuela
China has long been an important economic partner of Venezuela, serving as its largest oil buyer and a major creditor. Beijing has consistently maintained that Venezuela has the right to follow its own economic and political course without foreign interference.
Following the reported US military strikes and the detention of President Maduro, China said it was “deeply shocked” by the developments. A foreign ministry spokesman condemned what it described as Beijing’s use of force against a sovereign nation, arguing that such actions violate international law and risk destabilizing Latin America and the Caribbean.
Growing international pushback
China’s criticism echoes the reactions of many other countries that have voiced opposition to the US move, including Brazil, Russia, Colombia, Mexico and Cuba. In the weeks before the reported operation, Beijing had already expressed strong diplomatic support for Maduro’s government as tensions with Washington intensified.
Xi concluded his remarks by calling for stronger coordination among nations to maintain international order, emphasizing that cooperation, not conflict, is essential to achieving lasting global stability.
