Marwan Jumaa: Police launch manhunt after prisoner escapes during hospital transfer in Manchester

Police are seeking information about an inmate who escaped after being transported to hospital to receive medical treatment.

Marwan Jumaa, 20, escaped after being transferred from the secure hospital facility to North Manchester Hospital on Tuesday evening.

Considered a risk to himself and others, Jumaa is serving an indefinite hospital sentence for attacking two women.

Police have issued an urgent appeal for any information or intelligence regarding his whereabouts.

They asked people not to approach him but to call 999 immediately.

Jumaa, a Sudanese citizen, is black, skinny, has short black hair and is approximately 1.90 meters tall.

A video was circulated by the police in which the prisoner was caught on CCTV casually leaving the hospital in a light blue T-shirt.

Police have also deployed specialist resources, including the Critical Wanted Unit (FCWU), as they work urgently to find him.

He is believed to have links to Greater Manchester and Leeds, as well as Bury, Prestwich and Crumpsall in London.

Jumaa was last seen in the Radcliffe area on Tuesday evening.

Court records show Jumaa admitted three offenses at Woolwich Crown Court in January this year.

The crimes, all committed on July 17 last year in London, included assaulting an emergency worker, a police officer, robbing a woman and causing grievous bodily harm to a second woman.

Jumaa was held at HMP Belmarsh in March and was convicted of the offenses in April this year.

Detective Chief Inspector Abigail Cronin, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “We are appealing for anyone with information about Marwan’s whereabouts to come forward.

“I realize this may increase anxiety in the community.

“But I can assure you that we have officers working day and night to find Marwan and get him to hospital as quickly as possible.

“If you see him, do not approach him, please call 999 immediately quoting log number 3544 of 14/07/2026.”

Detective Superintendent Amber Waywell, of Greater Manchester Police, added: “We are carrying out a comprehensive search for Jumaa and are using all necessary resources and officers to bring him into lawful custody.

“We do not have any information to indicate an intent to cause imminent harm, but ultimately he is a wanted and dangerous individual.

“I fully understand this is news related, but I want the public to know we are working around the clock to find him. We have officers dedicated to the search and anyone with any concerns should contact their local team.”
