Ex-Sri Lanka President Wickremesinghe Granted Bail in Corruption Case

Colombo: Sri Lanka’s former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was arrested on Tuesday after being arrested for allegations of abuse public funds while in the office.
WickREMEMGHE is the leading president of the first Sri Lanka and the leading president Anura Kumara, who was elected on a fight against corruption last year, will be investigated for corruption within the scope of Dissanayake.
Danushka Ramanayake, the assistant of senior opposition policy, said that Wickremesinghe, a magistrate’s court in Colombo, was given bail. There was no more details about the decision.
The former president, who was arrested on Friday, attended the hearing at the Colombo National Hospital in intensive care and the court remotely.
Wickremetinghe was accepted on Saturday for dehydration and relevant health complications. Facility Director Pradeep Wijinghe, the media on Monday, said the situation shows some stability.
In 2023, WickREMEINGHE is accused of using public funds to attend his wife’s graduation ceremony in London after an official visit to Cuba and the United States. His party said he attended the graduation ceremony with an invitation in his official capacity.
During the bail hearing, thousands of Wickremesinghe’s supporters went to the streets to protest the arrest and called a political witch hunt. They shook the black flags and shouted slogans condemning the arrest and asking to be released immediately.
69 -year -old Samarasiri Kuruwitaarachchi said that the government could not fulfill the promises given to the public in the last year’s elections and now “trying to hunt political rivals”.
Kuruwitaarachchi said, “We condemn the arrest of Wickremetinghe, who has done a lot for the country,” he said. “We gathered here to demand justice for him.”
After the hearing ended, Wickremesinghe applauded supporters and danced on the street.
Opposition deputies and politicians, the arrest of the country’s democracy weakened, he said.
Transportation Minister Bimal Rathnayake rejected the charges and said that the arrest of Wickremetinghe was in accordance with the law. He told the local media on Monday that the government was authorized to investigate the alleged wrong practices of previous governments and that the law would be applied equally.
Wickremesing came to power after Sri Lanka’s economic uprising led President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign in 2022 in 2022.
Under its leadership, inflation fell, the local currency strengthened and the external reserves increased. However, he reacted to a public reaction to his government’s strict arco squeezing measures.
