Five dead after train and van collide in Mississippi

5 people died when a train and a minibus collided in rural Mississippi.

Stone County Prosecutor Wayne Flurry said all five people killed were in the van.

He said the only surviving minibus passenger, a 23-year-old woman, was taken to hospital. It was reported that no one on the train was injured.

The accident occurred when a Canadian Pacific Kansas City freight train collided with a vehicle at the crossing.

The location was near the town of Wiggins, about 45 miles northwest of Biloxi.

The Stone County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the crash.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to the families of the victims of this tragedy,” the railway company said. he said.

The driver of the van, Ryan C. Peterson, 26, and the front seat passenger, Kristina Carver, 45, were among those killed, Flurry said.

Both of Carver’s daughters died; Emley Chamblee, 22, and Sarabeth Chamblee, 20, and Demarcus Perkins, 23.
