Major incident declared at Southampton General Hospital | UK | News

A major incident has been declared after a fire broke out at a hospital in a British city on Sunday morning. Fire crews were called to Southampton General Hospital at 5.30am. The fire caused patients to be evacuated from the hospital and the roads around the hospital to be closed.

Southampton General Hospital said its A&E department was removing patients unless their condition was “life or limb threatening”. All outpatient appointments scheduled for Sunday have been cancelled. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) said there were more than 110 firefighters at the height of the blaze.

The fire was brought under control around 10 a.m., but crews are still on scene to “extinguish” it.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Local people requiring medical attention have been urged to use other services, including urgent treatment centers at the Royal South Hants Hospital in Southampton or Lymington New Forest Hospital.

The hospital trust said in a statement: “No one was injured as a result of the fire and patients from all affected areas were evacuated to safe areas of the hospital.

“Our Emergency Department is currently removing patients unless your condition is life or limb threatening.

“We would ask anyone needing medical attention to use RSH or other services in the community, including the Urgent Treatment Center in Lymington.”
