Fans raise Greenland’s flag to protest US Olympic hockey win over Denmark

At the men’s hockey game where Team USA defeated Denmark at the Winter Olympics, two fans raised the Greenlandic flag in the stands to protest President Donald Trump’s intention to take Greenland for the United States.

After Denmark took the lead early, the flag was raised with enthusiasm. However, the USA came back by winning the match 6-3.

Fans of the Latvian hockey team, Vita Kalniņa and her husband Alexander Kalniņš, who live in Germany, raised a large Greenlandic flag during warm-ups and again when the Danish team scored the opening goal of the preliminary round match against the United States, ultimately defeating Denmark 6-3.

“We are Europeans and I think we need to stand together as Europeans,” Kalniņš told the Associated Press.

“The people of Greenland decide what happens to Greenland, but since Greenland is part of the Danish kingdom and Greenland is part of Denmark as it is now, we support both countries against the United States, as in this case.”

Danish fan of the match, Dennis Petersen, said, “It doesn’t matter what the sport is; it can be tennis, it can be luge, it can be ice hockey, it can be football; it has nothing to do with politics. … They are athletes, not politicians.”

American fan of the match, Rem de Rohan, said: “I think it’s time for people to put this aside and compete and have fun between countries.” “We like to put down roots in every country here.”

On social media, fans reacted to the flag show and the match result.

“Now that the USA is ahead 4-2, can we bet that Denmark will give up Greenland if the USA wins the game?” one fan wrote in response to the flag.

One fan wrote: “Team USA won, now we get Greenland?”

Another fan similarly asked, “How did this happen? We won, now we have Greenland.” he said.

Some American conservative influencers used the US victory as a springboard to make viral jokes about the annexation of Greenland.

A U.S. comeback victory looked uncertain early in the game.
