Man found dead after suburban shoot-out with police

A man who got into a gunfight with police officers for allegedly committing domestic violence against his partner was found dead.
ACT Police visited a property in Canberra’s south on Saturday night to arrest a man for serious domestic violence offenses against his partner, who was being treated in hospital.
When police arrived, the 71-year-old man fired multiple shots at officers who returned fire before barricading himself in a shed on the property.
No police officers were injured in the shooting.
The man refused to speak to police, which led to the involvement of the Australian Federal Police tactical response team, the bomb response team and specialist negotiators.
They tried to negotiate with him and eventually entered the shed just before midnight, where they found the man dead from suspected self-inflicted harm.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
ACT Policing’s criminal investigations and AFP professional standards investigate the circumstances surrounding the matter marked as a critical incident.
A coroner has also been notified and is leading the investigation.
