American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) doubled down on warning The move to oppose transgender surgeries on children under 19 reflects a broader turn to “common sense” and science over ideology, one member told Fox News.
“[They’re] I actually look at the evidence and their statement says the benefits do not outweigh the harms and [that] The available evidence is of low quality or low quality,” Dr. Sheila Nazarian told “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday.
“These are the kids we’re talking about. Many of us have been very vocal about this issue, and I’m very happy to see the American Society of Plastic Surgeons doubling down on their statement from last year.”

The organization updated its guidance on Tuesday to formally recommend postponing irreversible gender-related surgical procedures until patients are at least 19 years old, citing long-term data from Europe that raised concerns about outcomes for minors.
Nazarian pointed to long-term findings that influenced ASPS’s decision, noting that “progressive-leaning” European countries such as the United Kingdom, Sweden and Finland have already halted such procedures for minors.
Asked how the procedures were allowed to move forward without evidence supporting their effectiveness for mental health, Nazarian said he initially thought doctors were doing the right thing until approached with questions about the data.

“I said, ‘What about all this long-term data coming out of Europe?’ ‘What long-term data is coming out of Europe?’ he said. And at that point I realized it was ideology driven. “This is a money-based thing,” he said.
“The hospital systems and doctors who performed these surgeries made a lot of money. We should not treat our patients, especially children, this way.”
Nazarian went further, arguing that many minors who underwent the procedures had underlying mental health or developmental issues and were not given adequate informed consent.

“Based on the study you looked at, 30 to 60% of these kids had medical, mental, behavioral diagnoses like autism, like depression, anxiety, and these doctors and psychologists told their parents, ‘You can either have a transgender child or you can have a dead child,’ and that is emotional blackmail,” he said.
“There is no evidence to show that these procedures actually reduce suicidality, so they were lied to. They were not given informed consent, and I think they actually made a case based on that.”
