Count begins in South Australia as polls close

Polls have closed and counting is underway in South Australia as politicians, analysts and political junkies across the country wait to see whether One Nation’s polling power will translate into votes.

Prime Minister Peter Malinauskas is predicted to lead Labor to a resounding victory; polls show his personal approval rating will rise to 63 percent and his party’s core support will rise to 40 percent.

But the state opposition entered the vote with record low primary support.

A News poll taken on the eve of the election put the South Australian Liberals on just 16 per cent and One Nation on 19 per cent.

A YouGov poll earlier in the week showed those figures rising to 19 per cent, with One Nation at 22 per cent.

If these numbers are reflected on the ballot papers, One Nation could overtake the Liberals.
