The UK could face prolonged wintry conditions next week; new weather maps show continuous snowfall in various districts for about 30 hours. WXCharts suggests the first bands of snow will begin at 3pm on Tuesday, May 12, and continue until 9pm on Wednesday, May 13.
By midday on Wednesday maps showed snow spreading across parts of Yorkshire and County Durham, including Harrogate and Darlington, while Newcastle and Durham were also bracing for showers. Widespread snow is also expected in Scotland from Ayr to central and northern regions during the same period. Snow is expected to reach northwest Scotland around 6pm on Tuesday, according to WXCharts maps. Further south, areas in northern England including Blackpool, Preston and Blackburn are expected to receive rainfall. In addition to this snow, temperatures in much of Scotland are also forecast to drop to freezing by around 6am on Wednesday, with low temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees across much of England.
Here’s the Met Office’s forecast for Tuesday to Thursday: “Rain moves south-east on Tuesday. This is followed by sunshine and showers on Wednesday and Thursday, occasionally heavy and thundery. Fairly cool and often windy. Frosts continue overnight.”
Netweather.tv meteorologist Nick Finnis wrote in his latest weather blog: “Later in the week, the weather will originate from inside the arctic circle so it will feel noticeably cold, especially out of the sun, while there is a possibility of snow for the Scottish highlands.
“In the cool air flow in the north or northwest direction, there will be showers on most days, when the polar air arrives, it will become more severe starting from the middle of the week, and at night, there will be a risk of widespread frost, especially as the sky is clear later in the week.
“Another weakening cold front will move south-east across the UK on Tuesday, reaching the south-east in the early evening, with just a band of cloud and scattered rain which will not be too much for most, with very little rain when it reaches the south-east.
“There’s some sunshine ahead, with sunny skies returning after the front clearing, but showers moving in to the northwest. Temperatures similar to Monday.”
