State Rep. Gene Wu, the leader of Democrats in the Texas House of Representatives, is facing a backlash from conservatives after a clip of him calling on various racial groups to unite against common “oppressors” resurfaced.
The resurfaced viral clip was from an episode dated December 31, 2024. “Define American” podcast Titled by Antonio Vargas, “1/3 of Residents in This Texas County Are Undocumented.”
Vargas argued that the future of the United States would be determined by Texas and asked Wu to show him the big picture. One of the powerful forces driving modern politics, especially on immigration, is the concern that “Whites” in America are becoming a racial and political minority, Wu said.
“The scary thing to me is that what is driving this new anti-immigrant sentiment is entirely a sense of White nationalism,” Wu said.
“There’s a sense that ‘America really only belongs to white people,’ which is that many people believed that God gave America to White people to run, and whenever immigrants and minorities make progress in this country, it’s seen as a slight against them.” he continued.

Both agreed that whites were already or nearly a racial minority in Texas; Wu explained that for now, they are the majority of people eligible to vote. The host then asked Wu to talk about the majority-Latino region and the relationship between Latino and Asian communities, especially those with immigrants from both groups.
“I think you hit exactly the right spot,” Wu said. “Not just Latinos. Not just Asians. Not just African Americans. Everyone. Right? We, our country and the powers that be, have spent a tremendous amount of time and effort and money to make sure that these groups never unite, that they always see each other as enemies, rivals, without realizing that they share one thing in common, that the oppressors are all the same. The pressures come from one place.”
“I always tell people that the day Latino, African-American, Asian and other communities realize that they share the same oppressor is the day we start winning, because we are now the majority in this country,” he continued. “We have the power to take over this country, do what’s necessary for everyone, and make everything fair.”
The 2024 comments resurfaced on social media, causing Wu to face backlash from his fellow Texans.

“Gene Wu is a radical racist who hates millions of Texans just for who they are. [W]hit This is the modern Democratic Party” Texas Attorney General and Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton wrote.
Former Texas GOP Chairman Matt Rinaldi wrote: “This clip is widely distributed due to its advocacy [W]suffered genocide. People need to understand that this is not some random Democrat backpedaling. This is the LEADER of the Texas House Democratic caucus.”
“The Democratic Party is founded on bigotry” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, responded.
Rep. Chip Roy, Texas also called on Wu to resign.
“Unlike many Democrats, he acknowledges his racism [W]Hit people and call to ‘take over this country’. “He should resign or the TX Legislature should strip him of all his powers,” he wrote. “One more reason for me to pass the PAUSE Act. Stop importing people who hate you.”
After the backlash, Wu tried to backtrack and claimed he was talking about Republicans, not Whites.
Evan Mintz of the Houston ChronicleReporting on the viral clip of the lengthy interview, he said, “nowhere in the clip does Wu mention this.” [W]hit people.”

However, before the segment shown in the clip, Wu had talked about “White people” and their racial anxiety about being a minority in America.
“To clarify, I even called Wu to ask who exactly he meant by ‘common oppressor,'” Mintz wrote. “The answer: Republicans.”
“It’s undeniable that Republicans have spent the last 50 years trying to take down communities,” Wu told the writer.
“Some Republicans engaged with what Wu actually said and attacked him for dividing the American people into subgroups in the first place — yes, that is what he did,” Mintz reported.
Wu’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
